Submission Rules

Awards and Eligibility:

The contest is open to young adults between the ages of 11 and 18. Awards include Library publication and promotion of the winners through the Library and City Council.

Age Divisions:

The contest has two age groups: 11 to 14 and 15 to 18. Within each age division, there are four categories.


  • Short Story - each entry no more than 1,500 words
  • Poems - one poem, no more than 300 words
  • Lyrics - entry must be complete in and of itself, and not a fragment of a larger work. All genres of music are accepted. It must be original and not infringement on any music copyrights.
  • Manga - entry must be complete in and of itself, and not a fragment of a larger work. No more than 8 pages, with or without words, in black and white or color, and fiction or nonfiction. No clip art allowed. Use flat 8.5 x 11 paper.

Please include your category in the description field during the submission process.

You may enter ONLY one manuscript per category, but you may enter all categories in your age group.


Entries that don't meet the following requirements may not be judged:

  • Do NOT put your name anywhere on your manuscript. That information should only be on the entry page when you submit your work.
  • Double-space and type your entry in size 14, Arial font.
  • Include the title and page number in the upper right-hand corner of every page.
  • A new submission must be made for each entry, even for the same contestant entering multiple categories.

Use the library scanner to scan your printed entry if needed. You can also ask for assistance from library staff and we will be happy to help you!
